Former Disney star, Brenda Song, claims she never got the chance to audition for the movie Crazy Rich Asians because her 'image was basically not asian enough.'
Song expressed in her interview with Teen Vogue, "Their reasoning behind that, what they said was that my image was basically not Asian enough, in not so many words. It broke my heart. This character is in her late to mid-20s, an Asian American, and I can't even audition for it? I've auditioned for Caucasian roles my entire career, but this specific role, you're not going to let me do it?"
However, the director of the film Jon M. Chu denied the claim and even stated he is a big fan on Brenda Song.
I feel it would've been a great opportunity for both Brenda and John Chu to allow her to be a part of the movie. Brenda is a phenomenal actress and for someone to state she's not 'asian enough' without allowing her to audition is unfair and wrong. You cannot judge someone's skills and potential based on their image.
Would it have been different if she was a man? Is it because she is known for being on Disney channel that she wasn't able to audition? These are important questions to ask. However, I do believe there will be more opportunities for Brenda and that is exactly what happened. Shortly after getting back to work, Brenda landed the lead role in Secret Obsession and a Hulu original series Dollface! Congratulations to Brenda and much respect to her for speaking out and telling her side of the story!
