Film director and producer Ava DuVernay has been working on a very special limited series with Netflix. When They See Us is based on a true story where five black men - Antron McCray, Kevin Richardson, Yusef Salaam, Raymond Santana, and Korey Wise known as the “Central Park Five” were wrongfully convicted of a vicious rape they did not commit that took place in Central Park of April 1989. The film is a four-part series and will be told from the perspective of the five men. The film will follow the five men around from 1989 when the incident first occurred to 25 years later in 2014 when the charges were withdrawn.

DuVernay is the first African-American female director to receive a Golden Globe nomination and have a film nominated for a Best Picture Oscar. She believes this series will allow the five men to finally tell their truth and remove the moniker given to them. She expresses, “We wanted to reflect this perspective in our title, embracing the humanity of the men and not their politicized moniker.”

We cannot forget about the amazing cast who includes Michael K. Williams, Vera Farmiga, John Leguizamo, Niecy Nash, Storm Reid, Aunjanue Ellis, Kylie Bunbury, Marsha Stephanie Blake and many more!

The series will release May 31st on Netflix. Take a peek at the trailer below and let us know if you are interested in hearing the truth about the Central Park Five.
