Ava DuVernay is a critically acclaimed film director, producer, and screenwriter. She is most known for her work on the movie Selma, which led her to a Golden Globe nomination. She is also an Emmy, BAFTA and Peabody award winner.
Ava’s work is known to push the envelope and challenge the racial inequalities in today’s time.
Ava also directed Disney's Wrinkle In Time, featuring Storm Reid, Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling. The film is about a young girl and her brother, whose scientist father as disappeared. After going years without seeing him, the young girl, Meg, her brother and her friend- discover a new form of space traveling, and go off in hopes of finding her father. They are joined by three magical beings.
The film landed Ava an Oscar nomination, and makes Ava the highest grossing African-American woman director in domestic box office history
Selma was a movie based on the 1965 Selma march to Montgomery. Ava then went on to produce a documentary, which debut on Netflix. 13 is based on racial inequalities in the criminal justice system. She received an Oscar for Selma and a nomination for 13. These two movies alone go to show how needed Ava is in the film industry.
She is changing the face of the industry, and an inspiration to young filmmakers all over.
