Emmy winner, Lena Waithe, is the writer of the film Queen & Slim which she will also produce through her company Hillman Grad Productions. The director of the film is Melina Matsoukas who is best known for HBO’s Insecure and Beyonce’s Formation music video. Queen & Slim is based on an idea from the best-selling author James Frey and story by Waithe and Frey.
Queen & Slim is described as a Bonnie and Clyde story. It centers around a black couple’s first date that takes an unexpected turn when a police officer pulls them over and in self-defense they end up killing the officer! Terrified for their lives, the couple goes on the run and head to Cuba. On their journey, they grow a powerful love which shows their shared compassion and humanity.
Waithe expressed, “To me, this is protest art. It’s about being black and trying to fall in love in a world that’s burning down around you.” Matsoukas added, “It’s a film that defines black love as a revolutionary act. It shows that our union is the greatest weapon against the assault on black people in America."
The film stars Get Out’s Daniel Kaluuya and Jodie Turner-Smith as the couple. Bokeem Woodbine, Chloe Sevigny, and Sturgill Simpson also star in the film.
Queen & Slim marks both the writer and director’s feature film debut. It’s set to hit theaters November 27.
