Joaquin Phoenix, the famous actor and producer, calls out Hollywood during his acceptance speech at the British Academy Film Awards.

Phoenix received the award for the best actor for his role in the movie Joker. Mixed with many emotions, Phoenix started off his speech by expressing his excitement and humbleness in winning the award. "I feel very honored and privileged to be here tonight. BAFTAs have always been supportive of my career and I'm deeply appreciative" he stated. He goes on to say, he is conflicted because so many of his fellow actors who are deserving don't have the same privilege as he does.

"I think that we send a very clear message to people of color that you're not welcome here. I think that's the message that we're sending to people who have contributed so much to our medium and our industry in ways that we benefit from."

This has continuously been a problem in Hollywood and it is great that actors who have a voice are using it and bringing it to the attention of others. Many actors are not recognized for their hard work because the color of their skin. This year BAFTAs nominated only white actors which seems insane considering there were multiple movies and actors of color deserving of the nomination.

BAFTAs has promised to review all aspects of the voting process and to make a change. Do you believe progress will be made? What are your thoughts about Joaquin Phoenix's speech? Let us know!
