The live-action film The Little Mermaid has found its Ariel! Halle Bailey has been cast to play the princess of the sea.
Halle Bailey is an r&b singer who is known for her work on Grown-ish as Sky, a twin who is on the track team at college. She is also known as part of the singing sister duo who opened for Beyonce’s Formation World Tour. Although she has been in the entertainment industry before, The Little Mermaid will be Bailey’s first feature debut!
"After an extensive search, it was abundantly clear that Halle possesses that rare combination of spirit, heart, youth, innocence, and substance — plus a glorious singing voice — all intrinsic qualities necessary to play this iconic role," Director Rob Marshall stated.
We recently reported that Awkwafina, Melissa McCarthy, and Jacob Tremblay are also in talks to join the cast. However, Disney is definitely taking a diverse turn on things by casting Bailey as Ariel and we are here for it!
The live-action/CGI film is directed by Rob Marshall and produced by Marc Platt, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and John DeLuca. David Magee wrote the latest script of the film. Alan Menken who is the original film composer is writing new music for the reboot with Lin-Manuel Miranda crafting the lyrics. All the songs from the original film will be included as well.
Congratulations to Halle Bailey! We look forward to watching the film when it is released. Let us know what you think about Disney’s decision!
Above, Bailey expresses her gratitude and excitement for her new role!
