Meet Yalitza Aparicio: Indigenous Actress Who Broke the Internet With Her ‘Vogue Mexico’ Cover


As fans cheer “about time!” Vogue Mexico has revealed their January 2019 cover. The cover made history as it features Yalitza Aparicio, making it the first in the mag’s 20-year history to feature an Indigenous Mexican. The cover is titled “In tiu’n ntav’i” – “A star is born” – in the indigenous Mixtec language.


Yalitza Aparicio is breakout star of the movie Roma, airing on Netflix. The movie set in the early 1970s in Mexico City. The story is surrounding Cleo, a maid, and Sofia, her employer who lives in the house with her family. Both women have strained relationships with their significant others.


Roma is already making it’s mark because of its diversity. the Vogue cover is also making history, “Certain stereotypes are being broken: that only people with a certain profile can be actresses or be on the cover of magazines,” states Aparicio.
