Megyn Kelly is an American journalist, with her own morning show on NBC entitled ‘Megyn Kelly Today.’

Kelly is in a bit of hot water over blackface comments she made on her show, during a discussion about Halloween. Kelly proposed the question- “what is racist about doing blackface during Halloween?” She also defending whiteface and brought up the example of when ‘Real Housewives of New York’ star received a lot of backlash for dressing as Diana Ross for Halloween. "The Real Housewives of New York star Luann de Lesseps, who was accused of darkening her skin while dressing up as Diana Ross.”

"The iconic Diana Ross came up as an example, to me, I thought, why would it be controversial for someone dressing up as Diana Ross to make herself look like this amazing woman as a way of honoring and respecting her?”

Once the video of Kelly’s comment reached the internet, many fans questioned why Kelly had the right to speak on what could be deemed offense to another race.

“How are you gonna’ have a bunch of white people sit together and figure out what’s racist? White people don’t get to decide what’s racist. If I punch you, I don’t decide if it hurts or not, you do,” asked ‘Late Night with Seth Myers’ writer Amber Ruffin.

“Blackface is racist because It turns black people into a costume and divorces them from their humanity. We’re people, not costumes. But more importantly, it ignores the severely racist context in which blackface was introduced into this country, and actions don’t exist separate from their context,” she continued.

Kelly issued an apology to viewers and fans regarding her comments, "I realize now that such behavior is indeed wrong, and I am sorry. The history of blackface in our culture is abhorrent; the wounds too deep. I’ve never been a (politically correct) kind of person — but I understand that we do need to be more sensitive in this day and age. Particularly on race and ethnicity issues which, far from being healed, have been exacerbated in our politics over the past year.”
