Netflix is definitely stepping up their game with their original content. It was announced on Tuesday, Mama K’s Team 4 is set to air as the first animated series about four teenage superheroes from Africa!
The series tells the story about four teenage girls who live in a futuristic version of Lusaka, Zambia and are recruited by a retired secret agent to save the world.
The series was created by the Zambian writer Malenga Mulendema and designed by Cameroonian artist Malcolm Wope. Mama K’s Team 4 is produced by South Africa’s award-winning Triggerfish Animation Studios and British kids’ and family entertainment production company CAKE.
Mulendema, who in 2015 was one of eight winners of the Triggerfish Story Lab, expressed “In creating a superhero show set in Lusaka, I hope to introduce the world to four strong African girls who save the day in their own fun and crazy way. Most importantly, I want to illustrate that anyone from anywhere can be a superhero.”
Not only is this a step forward in creating diversity on the big screen, Netflix and Triggerfish Animation Studios are taking it a step further by recruiting female writers for the animated series!
Melissa Cobb, Vice President of Original Animation at Netflix stated, "In addition to giving African writers a global platform on which to be heard, we are excited to present this powerful and entertaining new animated series that brings Malenga’s incredible and unique vision to life on Netflix.”
We are super excited that Netflix is recognizing and exporting the work of Zambians and the African culture. We look forward to watching the series when it is released! What do you think about the animated series Mama K’s Team 4 ? Let us know!
